Albion Online Item Power Explained
Item Power looks simple, but buying a more expensive set is not always the best way to get stronger. Here is how IP actually works, where it comes from, how specialization changes it and where softcaps start reducing your gear.
T4700 Base IP
T4.3+300 Enchantment
T71000 Base IPWhat actually gives you Item Power?
Tier, enchantment, item type, quality and your Destiny Board all matter. Tier and enchantment are the easiest IP to buy. Specialization takes longer, but it stays with you and lets cheaper gear reach much higher Item Power.
What Item Power Actually Means
Item Power is the number Albion uses to scale many stats and abilities on your equipment. Higher IP generally means a stronger version of the same item, but Average IP by itself does not tell you exactly how strong your whole build is.
Higher weapon IP improves the parts of your weapon and abilities that scale with Item Power.
Armor pieces gain stronger scaling stats and abilities as their Item Power goes up.
Raising your helmet IP does not make your weapon hit harder just because your Average IP went up.
Tier and Enchantment
For simple equipment, Tier 4 starts at 700 base IP and every tier after that adds 100. Enchantment also adds 100 IP per level, which is why lower tier enchanted gear can often reach the same target IP for less silver.

Quality Can Be Cheap Item Power
Quality adds flat Item Power without changing the tier or enchantment. Sometimes the jump to a better quality is much cheaper than buying another tier or enchantment level.

Masterpiece+100 IPSpecialization Is Where Long-Term IP Comes From
This is the part you cannot simply buy from the Marketplace. Leveling the exact item you use gives much more IP than the general mastery node, and other specializations in the same tree can add smaller cross bonuses too.
Mastery IP per level
The mastery node above the item adds a small amount of Item Power to items in that mastery.
Equipped specialization per level
The specialization for the exact item you are wearing is the big one. Level the item you actually use first.
Cross specialization per level
Other specs in the same mastery add smaller mutual bonuses. The exact rate depends on the item type.
Mastery Modifier
Tier 5 and above combat gear multiplies the Item Power you gain from the relevant Destiny Board mastery and specialization bonuses. It does not multiply the item's base IP.
The Simple Item Power Formula
You do not need to calculate this every time you equip something, but understanding the order makes it much easier to see where your IP is coming from.
Tier + Type + Enchantment + Quality+DESTINY BOARD IP
Mastery + Specialization + Cross Spec+MASTERY MODIFIER BONUS=FINAL ITEM POWER

What Counts Toward Your Average IP?
Your Average Item Power uses six combat slots. It is useful for entry requirements and quick comparisons, but remember that each item's own IP controls what that item actually does.

Softcaps do not delete all IP above the cap. They keep only part of the excess. These values are applied to the affected item power, so expensive gear can give much less extra power inside capped content.
| Content | Entry / Minimum | Softcap | Excess IP Kept | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Hunter Corrupted Dungeon | 700 Base IP | 900 | 10% | Non-lethal |
| Stalker Corrupted Dungeon | 900 Base IP | 1000 | 20% | Full loot |
| Slayer Corrupted Dungeon | 1100 Base IP | 1300 | 50% | Full loot |
| 2v2 / 5v5 Hellgate — Non-Lethal | 700 | 900 | 10% | Same cap for both sizes |
| 2v2 / 5v5 Hellgate — Lethal | 900 | 1100 | 35% | Same cap for both sizes |
| Duo / Trio Depths | 900 Base IP | 1200 | 20% | Orange PvP |
| Blue & Yellow Open World / Static Dungeons | — | 1200 | 20% | Also applies to Yellow Mists & Knightfall Abbeys |
Randomized Dungeons are not affected by the Blue and Yellow Zone softcap. Albion applies softcap rules to individual items rather than simply cutting your displayed Average IP.
Hunter 900 / 10%, Stalker 1000 / 20%, Slayer 1300 / 50%.

Albion Wiki sourceThe Fastest Route to More Item Power
If you only care about reaching a higher number, do not start by replacing your entire set. Fix the weakest part first, then compare the cheapest way to buy the next chunk of IP.
Fix the weakest slot
A low cape or off-hand can drag down a good set. Bring weak slots closer to the rest before over-upgrading something that is already strong.
Compare Tier, Enchantment and Quality
A tier step, an enchantment level and the jump from Normal to Masterpiece can each represent around 100 flat IP. Buy whichever upgrade gives you the target IP for the least silver.
Level the exact item you use
Equipped specialization gives +2 IP per level before the Mastery Modifier. Long term, this is what lets cheaper gear perform like much more expensive gear.
Check the content softcap
If most of your extra IP will be heavily reduced inside the activity, buying another expensive tier can be a bad use of silver.
Use a build that is already made for the content.
Pick your activity and compare tested builds, gear, spells and gameplay notes instead of chasing IP without a plan.
Albion Online Item Power FAQ
What is Item Power in Albion Online?
Item Power, usually shortened to IP, is the number that represents the strength of a piece of equipment. Higher IP improves many of the stats and abilities that scale from the item.
How do I increase Item Power in Albion Online?
You can increase Item Power with higher tier gear, enchantment, better quality, specialization and mastery levels. Higher tier combat gear also has a Mastery Modifier that increases the Item Power coming from your Destiny Board.
Is T4.3 the same Item Power as T7?
For a simple item before quality and Destiny Board bonuses, T4.3 and flat T7 both add up to the same 1000 base IP because every enchantment level adds 100 IP. Item type, quality and mastery bonuses can still make the final IP different.
What counts toward Average Item Power?
Head, chest, shoes, cape, main hand and off hand count toward Average Item Power. A two-handed weapon fills both weapon positions for the average. Bag, food, potion and mount do not count.
What is the Stalker Corrupted Dungeon IP cap?
Stalker Corrupted Dungeons have a 1000 IP softcap and keep 20 percent of Item Power above the cap. The current entry requirement is 900 Base Item Power.
What is the Item Power cap in the Depths?
Duo and Trio Depths currently require 900 Base Item Power and use a 1200 Item Power softcap with 20 percent scaling above the cap.
Do Ancient Lands have an Item Power cap?
I could not verify a single published universal numeric Item Power cap for Ancient Lands from the current official Dragonfire material, so this guide does not list an unverified number.
